چکیده

The Bacanga River Estuary is socioeconomically important due to artisanal fishing and aquaculture. It blocked by a dam under human pressure along its drainage basin, intensifying the eutrophication process. This study reports on occurrence of phytoplankton blooms trophic state (TSI TRIX) at six sampling sites during annual cycle. estuary was divided into downstream upstream regions. Higher salinity, turbidity, depth, lower dissolved oxygen levels were found downstream; whereas, high chlorophyll nutrient concentrations observed in both There Leptocylindrus danicus (1.45 × 106 cells L-1) Skeletonema costatum (1.89 whereas phytoflagellate proliferation, such as those Chlamydomonas sp. (13.17 L-1), Euglena gracilis (7.84 proxima (1.03 recorded upstream, with discriminant species this zone. Both indices (TSI; indicated elevated conditions for estuary, classifying it hypereutrophic. Nevertheless, TSI only showed significant relationship some specific blooms. Thus, seems be index better response assessment estuarine ecological functioning.

Artificial Neural Network Approaches to the Prediction of Eutrophication and Algal Blooms in Aras Dam, Iran

Abstract Background and purpose: Eutrophication is one of the major environmental problems in waterways causing substantial adverse impact on domestic, livestock and recreational use of water resources. Aras Dam, Iran which provides Arasful city with drinking water, has chronic algal blooms since 1990. Levels of up to 900,000 cells/mL of toxic cyanobacteria (mainly Anabaena and Microcystis) hav...

Cladocerans (Branchiopoda) of a tropical estuary in Brazil.

The study was conducted in the Capibaribe river estuary in Recife (Brazil) to assess the role played by cladocerans in a eutrophic environment. Samplings were carried out monthly at 4 fixed stations along the estuary from July 1987 to June 1988. Collections were made with a plankton net of 65 micrometers mesh size. Six cladocerans species were registered: Penilia avirostris, Diaphanosoma spinul...

Ten possible cases of tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP) in Northeastern Brazil (Ceará) are presented. They show the typical symptoms and signs of TSP consisting of weakness of the lower limbs, spastic gait, hyperreflexia, bladder dysfunction and variable signs of posterior columns impairment. The laboratory examinations excluded other compressive, infective, degenerative or demyelinating lesio...

Diatom Assemblage in a Tropical Lake of Northeastern Brazil

The composition and spatial variation of diatom assemblage in surface sediments of Caçó Lake (shallow, mesotrophic and weakly acid lake – Maranhão State, Brazil) were analyzed in order to know the distribution pattern of the species along the lake during rainy season (April 1999). Four zones were established in the lake based on 21 diatoms species and habitat affinities. The first three zones (...
